NFL Week 5 Results

Sorry for the delay on this one. The big story of week 5 was the surprise Broncos beating the Patriots in overtime. Did your team fare as well?

Cincinnati Bengals 17, Baltimore Ravens 14 (predicted: Cincinnati Bengals 23, Baltimore Ravens 24)

Impressive win by the Bengals (or pathetic loss by the Ravens?) to throw some water on Joe Flacco’s fire. The Ravens don’t really have anyone else to blame but themselves, as defensive penalties allowed Carson Palmer to lead the game winning drive.

Oakland Raiders 7, New York Giants 44 (predicted: Oakland Raiders 9, New York Giants 28)

I thought it was funny how the Raiders didn’t even try to win this one in the second half. They have so little confidence in Jamarcus Russell that they only passed 13 times despite being blown out by 37 points.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers 14, Philadelphia Eagles 33 (predicted: Tampa Bay Buccaneers 16, Philadelphia Eagles 38)

Donovan McNabb returned to the lineup and along with Jeremy Maclin led the Eagles over the still-hapless Bucs. Maybe Tim Tebow won’t even have to leave Florida in April.

Minnesota Vikings 38, St. Louis Rams 10 (predicted: Minnesota Vikings 30, St. Louis Rams 6)

No surprises here.

Cleveland Browns 6, Buffalo Bills 3 (predicted: Cleveland Browns 17, Buffalo Bills 20)

Ralph Wilson’s Hall of Fame inductance ceremony at half time was cancelled, and for good reason. The Bills entire franchise is in disarray, quite amazing considering their recent high draft picks and soft schedule. I wrote that whoever lost this one had a claim as the league’s worse team, but amazingly the outcome was inconclusive.

Pittsburgh Steelers 28, Detroit Lions 20 (predicted: Pittsburgh Steelers 31, Detroit Lions 14)

Disturbingly close win for the Steelers, whose defense has clearly taken a step back from last year.

Washington Redskins 17, Carolina Panthers 20 (predicted: Washington Redskins 18, Carolina Panthers 26)

Leave it to the Redskins to give the miserable Panthers their first win.

Dallas Cowboys 26, Kansas City Chiefs 20 (predicted: Dallas Cowboys 34, Kansas City Chiefs 24)

Well looks like Jerry Jones did one smart thing in the offseason not concerning Terrell Owens. Refusing to deal Miles Austin to the Jets certainly paid off in Kansas City, as Austin had a record-setting game with 250 receiving yards on just 10 receptions.

Atlanta Falcons 45, San Francisco 49ers 10 (predicted: Atlanta Falcons 20, San Francisco 49ers 27)

Ouch. Losing by 35 at home is not a good sign for Mike Singletary’s reformed 49ers.

Houston Texans 21, Arizona Cardinals 28 (predicted: Houston Texans 28, Arizona Cardinals 35)

Not quite the shootout we expected, but an entertaining game nonetheless. If only Andre Johnson had decided to play in the first half, the Texans might have pulled it out.

New England Patriots 17, Denver Broncos 20 (predicted: New England Patriots 18, Denver Broncos 20)

Who would have thought that the Denver Broncos would hold Tom Brady to a season low 215 yards? Denver silenced its doubters and is looking like an early AFC favorite. 10 wins should be enough to get them into the playoffs, and with games against Kansas City, Oakland, and Washington remaining they just need just 2 additional wins to reach that plateau.

Jacksonville Jaguars 0, Seattle Seahawks 41 (predicted: Jacksonville Jaguars 27, Seattle Seahawks 20)

One of the worst defeats in franchise history, the Jaguars got slaughtered by Matt Hasselbeck in his first game back from injury.

Indianapolis Colts 31, Tennessee Titans 9 (predicted: Indianapolis Colts 30, Tennessee Titans 24)

Not really sure why Keith Bulluck was left covering a slot receiver, but it didn’t work. Peyton Manning posted his fifth straight 300-yard game to open the 2009 season and head into the Colts’ bye week with a lot of momentum.

New York Jets 27, Miami Dolphins 31 (predicted: New York Jets 21, Miami Dolphins 24)

Nice win for the Dolphins who lived up to Joey Porter’s talk (for once).

10-4 in week 5, 53-23 on the season.

Stumble me!
