I receny went to a lecture by a british organisation called 'guerilla science'. The talk was mainly on the brain and music and sociology and music. It was nice to read this post and see further things touched on - firstly a book I can recommend is 'your brain on music ' ;it's really fun and highly accessable as a read. Secondly, regarding animals and song - apaarently, the whole bird song thing is a matter of rhythm and not pitch. It was disclosed I. This talk I went to that only the human and the domesticised animal can recognise a tune as harmonious or in fact, knowingly make music. It's is our human interpretation of bird and whalesong that we hear it resembling a tune, and the animals do not. How they know that I will never know, but appaerently it is true - in the lecture, it was followed by an amazi g video of a domesticised parrot dancing to michael Jackson!

Cool. I have been in some community orchestras and have also enjoyed the experience. It's really quite a unique opportunity when you think about it.

I play the flute, and I play in a community orchestra of about 50 members. Although we have a few professionals in the group, most of us have other lives and just play for the enjoyment we get from making music. We play about 7 concerts a year and love watching people's faces as they listen to the music.

This is a really thoughtful post about music. As an amateur classical musician I appreciate the thinking about the importance of music in our lives. I especially like the thought that "music history is world history". Music explains a lot of who we are.

I look forward to future thoughts.
